In the mid-price range, Coleman sells good quality tents. In some areas it rains plenty, so you have to be prepared. Cotton does not dry quickly and retains the water against your skin causing you to become even colder with the added risk of hypothermia developing, so don't wear it on damp days. No matter how thirsty you feel, drinking water from streams and rivers can only compound your problems while camping.
Ropes and other equipment and gear used for climbing and survival are necessary. First Aid Kits are readily available, pre made, in pharmacies and outdoor sporting goods stores. The best lantern to use inside a tent is a battery style. These knives can be simple small pocket knives as long as they get the job done, but keep in mind that skimping on your knife could mean skimping on the tool best suited to ensure your survival.
Our first spring weekend trip took us to a beautiful BC Provincial park. Always wear a knitted hat or a woolen beanie and bring an extra one just in case. You will need a flashlight so you can see your way around after you've put off your campfire. The climbers are required to wear safety equipment that does nothing to make the climb easier, but provides protection from falls.
Once you are out on the trails, you and your feet will appreciate the choice and the extra money spent. Once you have your basic gear, it lasts for a good bit of time. If you are participating in water activities, make sure to wear life vests for safety. Ice climbing utilizes many of the same techniques as traditional climbing but with some different equipment.
Hiking and climbing are fairly inexpensive sports, so get out there. You should also develop a routine for keeping your feet dry and comfortable.
