There are some sport-wool fabrics that are used in long johns, next a warm layer of clothing that may be a fleece type material and finally a quick-drying outer layer from a material like nylon or goretex. You will need to be able to spend long hours walking, without producing chafing or blisters.
The bottom line is that the view is never as good as it is when you hike to the top of the mountain. If you don’t dress properly, you can run into a situation where even minimal frostbite occurs. Wear or carry gloves and have them attached to your jacket to prevent losing them. It is alright to think that the water from a spring or stream is ok to drink, there is nothing wrong with taking some precautions.
Notify family, neighbors or people of importance that you are going and when you are expected back from your hiking trip. The feeling of challenging yourself will also be great for your mental health. If you get lost, remember to stay calm, and you will find yourself safe in no time. Even on longer backpacking trips, I use thin nylon socks and lightweight running shoes.
