If you know where civilization is, however, then take out your compass and make your way back to the road or the trail. Boots must be water repellent or have a protective coating to keep them from absorbing water. You will need a flashlight so you can see your way around after you've put off your campfire. Always wear a knitted hat or a woolen beanie and bring an extra one just in case.
A single mantle in a lantern gives off about three hundred watts of light. Keep in mind, though, that good hiking boots are not daily wear shoes. A common material today for outdoor activity is Gore-Tex because of its quality thermal properties. When trying on boots, always test them using a sock that matches the thickness of the socks you plan to wear.
All in all, try to ensure you are well prepared, avoid solo trips the first time, check all your equipment before you leave and get some first aid training. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.
